Clauses and types of clauses : A group of words which forms part of a sentence and has a verb is called Clause.

A clause :
➤ containing a subject and predicate.
➤ contains only one subject and one verb.

Example :
➥ I eat the mongo, while I was travelling to Pune.
➥ Bhavi told me that her uncle lived in Bengaluru.

➽ There are two types of clauses.
1] Principal/ Independent clause
2] Subordinate clause

1] Principal/ Independent/ Main clause :

A clause stand by itself independently in the sentence to make it meaningful is called Principal/ Independent clause.

➤ Two independent clauses can be connected by the words : but, and, when, for, so, or, yet etc.

Examples :
➥ She tried her best, but not reach there.
➦ I went to Mumbai and visited to Nariman Point.
➥ He received the box, when he complete his work.

2] Subordinate/ Dependent clause :

A clause that cannot stand by itself independently in the sentence to make it meaningful is called Subordinate/ Dependent clause

➤ Dependent clauses help to the independent clauses to complete the sentence.
➤ In each dependent clause sentence, the first word is a subordinator, which contains noun or relative pronouns or subordinating conjunctions clause markers.

Example :
➥ If you work hard, you will succeed.
— First part is – Subordinate Clause and
— Second part is Dependent Clause.

➥ If you don’t write, I won’t leave you.
— First part is – Subordinate Clause and
— Second part is Dependent Clause.

➥ Vijay bought a car, which was too good.
— First part is – Dependent Clause and
— Second part is – Subordinate Clause.
