Types of Verb | Verbs: The word that completes the meaning of the sentence and it represents the action in the sentence is called a verb.

Example :
➥ Neel doing the study.
➦ The cow eats fodder.
➥ Swara reads the book
➦ Our team is won.

➤ In the above sentence “doing”, “eats” “reads” and “won” are verbs.

➦ The verb is necessary to complete the sentence.
➪ The verb is a word that indicates an action in the sentence.
➦ Every verb gives an idea of action, but some verbs give an idea of the state, idea of being or idea of existence instead of action.

1] Finite Verbs :

A verb that changes its form according to changes of person and number of the subject from the sentence is called ‘Finite Verb’.
➪ A Finite verb has a tense.

Example :
➥ Rudra plays cricket.
➦ Harshal eats fruit.
➥ Vedanti does poetry.
➦ Vishal catches fish.

➤ In the above sentence “plays”, “eats”, “does” and “catches” are verbs.

2] Non-Finite Verbs :

A verb that does not change its form even the person and number of subject from the sentence is change, is called ‘non-finite Verb’.
➪ Non-Finite verbs work as nouns, adjectives, adverbs rather than actual verb.
➪ They do not have any direct relation with the subject.

Example :
➥ Tanmayee speaks English very well.
➦ Harsh went Delhi to play.
➥ Harshali tried to run fast.
➦ Sara have broken the toys.

➤ In the above sentence “speaks”, “to play” “tried” and “broken” are verbs.

3] Action Verbs :

A verb that indicates what the subject of the sentence is doing.

Action Verbs have two types :

A] Transitive verbs :

An action verb as the name suggests or tells you about an action that passes from the subject to object is called a Transitive verb.

➪ They must have a direct object.

Example :
➥ Twisha ate an orange.
➦ Bhavi painted the bus.
➥ The birds built nests on the tree.
➦ Harshali is reading a book.

➤ In the above sentence “ate”, “painted” “built” and “is reading” are verbs.

B] Intransitive verbs :

An action verb that does not pass over the action to an object is called an Intransitive verb.

➪ They may be followed by adjectives or adverbs.
➪ They just express a state of being.

Example :
➥ Vidya danced gracefully.
➦ Put away your books.
➥ Amit is painting right now.
➦ Do your practice regularly.

➤ In the above sentence “danced”, “put” “painting” and “do” are verbs.

4] Linking Verbs :

A verb that links the subject to a noun or adjective is called a Linking verb.

➪ They do not tell about the action performed in the sentence.
➦ They provide additional information about the subject.
➪ Linking verbs can be called ‘to be’ verbs.

Example: is, am, are, was, were, will be, shall be etc.
➥ Asavari is my best friend.
➦ I am an innocent boy.
➥ There will be no school tomorrow.
➦ The rooms were very neat and clean.

➤ In the above sentence “is”, “am” “will be” and “were” are verbs.

5] Auxiliary Verbs/ Helping Verbs :

A verb that helps to the main verb in the sentence is called Auxiliary Verbs/ Helping Verbs.

Example :
➥ Rajesh is going to school.
➦ Bhavi and Swara can play together.
➥ Grishma should present for the exam.
➦ Harsh was calling his friend.

➤ In the above sentence “is”, “can play” “should present” and “was” are verbs.

6] Modal Verbs :

A verb that helps the main verb to denote possibility, potentiality is called Modal Verbs.

➪ They are like helping verbs.

Example :
➥ He may want to meet you again.
➦ I would have told you.
➥ She should call her.
➦ You must follow the rules.

➤ In the above sentence “may”, “would” “should” and “must” are verbs.

Some basic forms of Verbs:

➥ The forms of verb changes to express the present, past, and future :

Base form: Santosh eats mango in the home.
Infinitive: Ask him not to eat
Present: Santosh eats mango in the morning.
PastSantosh ate mango in the morning.
Future : Santosh will eat mango in the morning.
