Finite and Non-finite Verbs: Hello friends, in this article we will learn about finite and non-finite verbs.

First of all, we will learn what is verb.

What is verb :

A verb is a word that shows ‘action‘ in a sentence. Verbs are of the following two kinds. Finite and non-finite verbs.

A] Finite verbs: Which word show tense, person, and number, and change accordingly. These verbs are only used in the present and past tense.

Example
➜ He wants to be a dancer.
➺ They want to be actors
➜ I like to get up early in the morning.

B] Non-finite Verb: Which word does not change its form with the number of persons of the subject changes are called a non-finite verb. Non-finite verbs are mainly three types of non-infinite verbs. Infinitives, gerunds, and participles.

Example
➜ He is playing a game.
➺ They liked walking to school
➜ I don’t want to see him again.

Solved example:

A) Identify the verb and state its kind:
1) She gave me a pen to write.
Finite verb: gave
non-finite verb: to read

2) Collecting stamps is my hobby.
Finite verb: Is
Non-finite verb: collecting

3) He loves cooking delicious food.
Non-finite verb: cooking

4) I am going to the shop to purchase some dresses.
Finite verb: going
Non-finite verb: to purchase

5) They were looking for a new mobile to purchase.
non-finite verb: looking and to purchase

6) Rohit wants to buy shoes.
Finite verb: wants
Non-finite verb: To buy

7) On entering the room, what I saw was shocking.
Finite verb: entering
Non-finite verb: shocking

8) The doctor advised him to eat healthy food.
Finite verb: advised
Non-finite verb: to eat

9) Waiting for him is really boring.
Non-finite verb: waiting
Finite verb: is

10) They had gone for racing.
Non-finite verb: racing
