What is Root Word :

Before moving to Predix and Suffix we will know about root words. So let’s understand what is the root word. A word that is the most basic form. It may be completed or sometimes incompleted.

Affixes are added to these root words to change the meaning of the word, as per the respective sentence, or to change the change word for its grammatically correct form.

It means with these affixes we correct our sentence, as per grammar as well as its meaning.

Types of Affixes :

There are two types of affixes, one is a prefix and another one is a suffix. Let’s see one by one.

A) Prefixes :

A Prefix is a letter or group of letters, which added before the root words. By adding this, a root word meaning will be changed.

Examples :

  1. Act – React
  2. Use – Unuse
  3. Active – Inactive
  4. Possible – Impossible
  5. Able – Unable

Like this, we can use “in”, “ir”, “im”, “un” to the given root word to form its negative meaning word.

B) Suffixes :

A Suffix is a letter or group of letters, which added after the root words. By adding this to a root word, it will change its grammatical form.

Examples :

  1. Sick – Sickness
  2. Unit – United
  3. Child – Childish
  4. Active – Actively
  5. After – Afterwords
