Que. 1. Read the lines given below. Imagine yourself in the situation and answer the questions, based on your imagination. After the games-practice, my friends and I were hungry. We decided to go to a snacks-outlet on the 3rd floor in a huge six-storeyed mall, on the way. Just as we paid our bill and were about to leave, there was an ear-shattering blast. A loud explosion on the 1st floor.
* What was your first reaction?
Answer: My first reaction was to get my friends and run towards the nearest exit.
* How did the public panic?
Answer: Everyone started running for their lives as soon as they heard the explosion. Instead of looking for the nearest exit and heading towards it, people were simply, yelling and running around aimlessly.
* What did some alert, sensible people do?
Answer: The alert and sensible people ran towards the exit, and some even went down to the 1st floor to help the people who were injured.
* What was the damage and danger?
Answer: A major part of the 1st floor was damaged. Most of the shops were completely destroyed. A lot of injured people were lying on the floor, calling out for help. The danger was that no one knew whether there would be another explosion. The fire extinguishers were not sufficient to put out the fire. It was difficult for people to get to those who needed help.
* Who came to the rescue?
Answer: The mall authorities stepped into action and tried to vacate the mall. They tried their best to put out the fire and to calm the people down. The fire brigade made it to the scene in time and put the fire out, so that the injured people could be rescued.
* How many were injured and killed?
Answer: 38 people were injured, and 15 people were killed.
* What effect did the instance leave on your mind?
Answer: The incident left me completely shocked. It made me realise that life is really short and that anything can happen at any moment. On the other hand, the incident also renewed my faith in humanity and the goodness of people. A lot of people bravely stepped forward to help the others.

(g) Where did the scientists find Titanic?
Ans : The scientists found the Titanic lying in two pieces on the ocean floor at a depth of around 4000 metres, that is, 13,000 feet.

(a) Reasons for the sinking of Titanic.
Ans: Following reasons can be said for the sinking of the Titanic:
- The man who was asked to keep a watch for icebergs was too late in noticing the iceberg that was in the path of the Titanic.
- Captain Smith, despite fighting hard, was unable to steer the ship away from the iceberg in time.
- The captain and his crew failed to stop the water that was pouring from the holes cut into the ship by the iceberg, from flooding through the ship.
(b) Effects of the sinking of Titanic.
Ans : The effects of the sinking of the Titanic are as follows:
About fifteen hundred people died along with the captain and his crew.
The world lost one of the finest luxury ships of its time.
The extent of passenger safety on ships was reconsidered.
A film was made about the fateful night of the tragedy.

A Simple Sentence is one that has only one Subject and one Predicate. It has only one Finite verb.

A Complex Sentence consists of one Main Clause and one or more Dependant or Subordinate Clauses.
For example : She went home, after school was over.
The boys found the book which had been lost.
A Compound Sentence consists of two or more Independant or Co-ordinate Clauses. They are joined by Co-ordinators. (For example : and, but, so, or, nor etc.)
For example: He finished his work and he left his office.
